Gemstones & Families

Choose with confidence by understanding gemstone families—what they include, how they’re treated, and how to care for them. Start with Quartz for daily wear, explore Tourmaline for colour banding, and learn what makes Jade unique.

What is a gemstone family?

Definition

A gemstone family is a group of varieties that share the same base mineral and crystal structure—for example, Quartz (SiO₂) includes crystalline types (amethyst, citrine, smoky, rose) and microcrystalline types (chalcedony, agate, jasper).

How to choose by family

Durability-first

For daily stacks, start with Quartz (Mohs ~7). Add accent stones for colour and texture.

Look-first

Love banding and zoning? Explore Fluorite and microcrystalline Quartz (agate/jasper).

Character-first

Prefer organic, heritage vibes? Choose Jade—just read treatment notes and care.

Care & authenticity checklist

Quartz family

  • Pros: versatile colours; daily-friendly hardness.
  • Watch: disclosed heat/irradiation in some varieties; avoid extreme temperature shock.
  • Clean: warm water + mild soap; soft brush.

Fluorite

  • Pros: striking colour bands; focus-forward aesthetics.
  • Watch: softer; avoid heat and harsh chemicals; store separately.
  • Clean: lukewarm water + mild soap; pat dry.

Turquoise family

  • Pros: iconic character; pairs beautifully with silver or warm metals.
  • Watch: stabilised/dyed/composite material in market—ask for exact treatment disclosure.
  • Clean: wipe after wear; avoid perfumes, chlorine and ultrasonic cleaners.

FAQs

Is citrine a quartz?

Yes. Citrine is the yellow-to-orange variety of Quartz. Natural citrine is relatively rare in nature; heat-treated material exists and should be disclosed on product pages.

Difference between jadeite and nephrite

Both are called “jade,” but they’re distinct minerals with different chemistry and internal structure—this affects appearance, toughness and value.

Stabilised turquoise vs natural—what’s the difference?

Stabilisation uses resins/polymers to reduce porosity and improve polish/colour stability. It’s common and should be transparently disclosed by sellers.

Microcrystalline vs crystalline quartz (agate, jasper, chalcedony)

Crystalline quartz (e.g., amethyst, citrine) has visible crystals; microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony) has crystals too small to see—varieties include agate and jasper.

Fluorite care—why avoid heat and chemicals?

Fluorite is softer and more sensitive than quartz. Avoid harsh chemicals and extreme temperature changes; clean with mild soap and lukewarm water, then dry gently.
