What is clear quartz?

Clear quartz—traditionally called rock crystal—is the colorless, transparent variety of the mineral quartz (SiO₂). It crystallizes in the trigonal system, is 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, and was once thought by the Greeks to be ice that never melted (krýstallos). Quartz is also one of Earth’s most abundant minerals, which explains why rock crystal occurs across many rock types and continents. 

How is it formed?

Quartz grows wherever silica-rich fluids or melts cool slowly enough to crystallize: in felsic igneous rocks (granites, rhyolites), in metamorphic terrains, as cements in sedimentary rocks, and as free-growing crystals in veins and open cavities. In volcanic regions, gas bubbles in basalt later fill with silica solutions; over time those cavities become geodes lined with quartz.

In the Ouachita Mountains (Arkansas & Oklahoma, USA), hydrothermal fluids deposited extensive quartz vein systems during late Paleozoic mountain building—producing famously water-clear crystals prized by collectors and, historically, industry.

  • Arkansas, USA (Ouachita Mountains): Long-worked deposits of large, transparent crystals; the Smithsonian exhibits an ~8,000-lb Arkansas quartz cluster. 
  • Brazil: A modern heavyweight for crystal clusters and geodes from basaltic terrains (Rio Grande do Sul and neighboring states). 
  • Worldwide: Quality rock crystal is also found from the Alps to Madagascar; museum collections illustrate the diversity of quartz habits globally. 

What is it typically used for?

Jewelry & objects. Rock crystal is cut, carved, faceted, and historically fashioned into bowls, lenses and fine objects thanks to its clarity and toughness. 

Technology. Quartz is piezoelectric: it generates electric charge under pressure and vibrates at stable frequencies under an applied voltage. That stability underpins watch crystals, clocks, radios and electronic filters. Modern devices typically use cultured (hydrothermal) quartz grown for purity and consistency—a practice that scaled dramatically in the 20th century.

Level 1 — No tools

  • Look under bright LED/daylight: Natural rock crystal is transparent but not “perfect”—tiny veils, wisps, or growth features are common. Molded glass often shows swirly flow lines and overly uniform appearance.

  • Refractometer: Quartz reads about 1.544–1.553 (birefringence ≈ 0.009). Common glass clusters around 1.50–1.52 with no birefringence gap.
  • Synthetic vs natural: Hydrothermal synthetic quartz exists. Visual clues (e.g., diagonal striations) can help, but lab methods (e.g., FTIR) confirm origin when needed.
If the price is high, ask for paperwork. Reputable sellers disclose treatments and lab-grown origin; major labs (e.g., GIA) can issue identification reports.
